Graduate Cloud Operations Specialist

 

The Cloud Operations teams are responsible and accountable for Sage’s online products and services portfolio. The teams ensure our products and services are highly available for our customers to help run their businesses. A Graduate Cloud Operations Engineer position will be part of our global team, providing a technical skillset to bridge the needs of both development and operations requirements, help deploy, administer, and improve automation using all the latest cloud technologies. The Graduate engineer is responsible for working as part of a team, to ensure our Products and Services are best of breed, world class, secure and performant for our customers.

The graduate engineer should have a basic understanding or knowledge of the relevant processes and technologies listed below, but possibly little or no Cloud experience. In this position they will develop their understanding of Cloud Technologies and the Cloud Ops role, through training, mentorship & a self-learning ethic. To back this up, Sage offers in parallel, a 2 year graduate learning scheme to help the candidate grow, not only technically, but also how to develop their inter personal skills, communication, influencing as well as build their relationships with stakeholders in a fast paced culture.

Our graduate engineers administer and maintain existing products and services, using standard operational processes & operational capabilities. Using guidance from Security, Architecture and Senior/Principal Cloud Operations Engineers, the graduate develops their knowledge, to help build new services always using the latest technology and building in automation and CI/CD, at the forefront of everything we do. The ideal candidate would have some knowledge & skills around scripting, however training will be provided. You will love doing independent research and have an ability to balance user requirements, while understanding policies and compliance boundaries. This role will evolve into a 24/7 operational role that requires on call coverage from each engineer to problem solve and actively resolve service incidents that may arise.

Key Responsibilities

Key accountabilities and decision ownership:

• Create, maintain, and administer cloud environments, ensuring they are secure and scalable to satisfy operational and customer needs.
• Monitor applications and systems, proactively identifying issues and mitigating them to improve the customer experience
• Perform ‘code’ and ‘code/infrastructure’ deployments
• Defining key metrics/logging and implement tooling that will provide all key stakeholders with information that will help identify improvements to the service on behalf of the customer.
• This role will require you get to know the development team’s world (source control, builds, backlogs, sprints, Agile etc) but also to bring the development team closer to the operational team's world (Infrastructure, OS, security, scripting, monitoring etc) working in a true DevOps role
• Keeping abreast of latest cloud technologies.
• Work with the Incident Manger during high pressure incident scenarios, balancing technical resolution and senior stakeholder communications, following standard documented processes.
• Communicate with key stakeholders on planned changes, incidents and service improvement plans
• Maintain Configuration Management DB for key services.
• Operate to ISO standards and document all processes
• Possibly participate in our 24x7 on-call rota

Key performance indicators: (3-5 Max)
Availability of their Product from a customers’ perspective
Delivery against agreed service improvement plan
Timely resolution of incidents and service tickets
Ability to problem solve and resolve issues following Incident Management Process


Entry Requirements:

A relevant STEM degree or an alternative degree supported by a keen interest in Cloud Ops Engineering.

Operating Systems: Windows and/or Linux
• Analytical, debugging, and problem-solving skills
• Some scripting knowledge for Task Automation (PowerShell, Bash, Ruby, Python, Go, Javascript)
• Clear customer focus and understanding how their actions directly impact the experience our customers receive
• Excellent Communication skills
• Experience dealing with multiple teams, multitasking & prioritisation skills
• Proficiency in English language, verbal and written with ability to build relationships and influence
• Good relationship builder at all levels, with ability to work in a matrix organisation and manage multiple stakeholders
• Results oriented, demonstrates initiative, is adaptable and flexible

Knowledge of some of the following would be helpful, but training will be provided:
• Databases - Any of: MSSQL, Azure SQL DB, AWS: RDS, MySQL, DynamoDB
• Understanding of High Availability/Disaster Recovery/Service Levels/KPIs
• Configuration Management: Ansible, Chef, Puppet, PowerShell DSC
• Some knowledge of online Web/Cloud based technologies (such as Apache, IIS, Nginx plus Tomcat, Java, Passenger, Rails, Node.js) or platform
• Cloud technologies (Microsoft Azure or Amazon Web Services (AWS) is an advantage)

Technical / professional qualifications:
• It is preferable, but not essential, that the post holder be educated to degree level in a relevant subject OR has knowledge in area of expertise.
