Research Scientist – Quantum Computing

Your Role and Responsibilities
IBM Quantum is developing a full-stack quantum computer, consisting of all relevant hardware and software solutions. IBM Quantum is seeking outstanding candidates with a strong background and research track record in mathematics, theoretical computer science, physics, or operations research to join our quantum computing team at IBM Research Europe in Dublin, Ireland. The position is open to early career or experienced professionals.

In this role you will be joining a strong and motivated team to work on optimization techniques for problems arising in quantum compilation, in order to efficiently map quantum circuits to physical quantum architectures. For this work, you will work with and contribute to Qiskit, the open-source quantum computing software development framework. You will also have the opportunity to explore novel quantum algorithms for challenging problems in optimization & AI. As part of this role, you will be working in a stimulating environment leveraging cross-disciplinary expertise in mathematics, physics and software development, and collaborate with Business Units, IBM Research labs and academic & industrial partners in the Irish quantum computing ecosystem.

In your role as a Research Scientist, you will define and perform cutting-edge research and publish your research at top venues and journals. With your proactive and collaborative approach to creative problem solving you will be driving new research areas. You are willing to engage with internal and external stakeholders to identify opportunities, plan a research agenda, provide advice to business units based on research results, and help transfer research technologies for adoption. Required Technical and Professional Expertise
• PhD Degree in any of the following domains: Theoretical Computer Science, Quantum Information, Mathematical Optimization, Quantum Physics.
• Strong publication record in top-tier research conferences and journals.
• Experience in programming Python.
• Experience in numerical linear algebra.
• Knowledge in quantum information theory, quantum computing & circuits.

Preferred Technical and Professional Expertise
• Experience in quantum compilation.
• Experience in quantum information theory, quantum computing & circuits.
• Experience in mathematical optimization.
• Knowledge in quantum algorithms for optimization & AI.
• Experience with collaborative development tools such as Git.
• Experience with Qiskit.
• At least 3 years’ experience in programming in Python.
