As Zalando transforms from Europe’s leading e-commerce company into The Starting Point for Fashion, this is an exciting time to join. As a (Senior) Data Engineer, you will build the next generation of Machine Learning (ML) infrastructure that scales with Zalando's ambitious growth plans. You will collaborate with other engineers, data scientists and domain experts to understand the input data required by our image and text based ML models, then translate these requirements into automated data pipelines that analyze, clean, transform and monitor data coming from different sources. The Market Insight project involves i) crawl and scrape eventually > 500 web shops that compete with Zalando across 25 countries daily, ii) find exact product matches between the Zalando assortment and these web shops, and iii) enable actionable intelligence based on the data. You will create tremendous impact on our 42+ million active customers by offering attractive offers in comparison to offers customers find at other shops, and over > 550 Zalando employees by providing insight dashboards that highlight what’s happening in various European fashion shops. You will also be responsible for building the execution infrastructure for competitor product matching against Zalando articles using Image or code based matching. In this role you will not only grow your engineering skills in a Python/Spark/K8s environment, but also learn how to bring ML into production. You will challenge our status quo, drive innovation and apply agile practices.
WHERE YOUR EXPERTISE IS NEEDED
- Plan interdisciplinary projects connecting data science, engineering and business domain knowledge
- Become an expert on data sources for our ML models and communicate your findings with stakeholders
- Develop automated, scalable data pipelines using Python, PySpark/Databricks & Kubernetes
- Create production environments to test, deploy and monitor ML models
- Monitor & troubleshoot our production systems
- Align rollouts with data scientists and commercial stakeholders
- Design, develop, deploy, operate and improve software solutions, that your peers praise for its elegance and code readability
WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR
- 4+ years of professional software development experience
- Hands-on experience using Python in a production environment
- Experience with data analysis tools (e.g. SQL, Pandas, Apache Spark, Jupyter Notebooks)
- Motivation to work in a cross-functional environment with constant exchange between product, data science and engineering. You are not purely focused on coding but also eager to understand the bigger picture and the why behind the what. You make technical complexity understandable for the business.
- Knowledge of AWS, Kubernetes, Databricks, Statistics and Machine Learning would be a bonus
- Experience with agile methodologies and automated testing
- Familiarity with containerization, microservice architecture, continuous integration and delivery.
- Clear communication skills when it comes to reporting needs and answering technical and service questions.
