Principal Automation Engineer

Position Summary:

The Successful candidate will be responsible for owning the technical strategy for the automation department in terms of technology development, adoption, and integration. You will have responsibility for defining the roadmap for the current and future infrastructure and also for the assessment analysis and incorporation of new technologies equipment services and tools into the automation group in order to maintain and grow the capabilities of the department and the business.

The scope will encompass the entire range of automated systems including PLC, SCADA, Vision Systems, Robotics, Networks, Lasers, AI and Machine Learning as well as systems and tool development to enable and enhance equipment design and commission for a high-volume medical device industry.

You will be expected to act as mentor and role model for senior automation engineers on site by supporting their design efforts through peer review and support methods and thereby developing a highly capable site automation team capable of delivering to the highest level of quality standards expected from a medical device company.

You will work closely with the engineering management function and take the lead on early-stage project design and development as well as provide support for technical critical issues as they arise.

The candidate will need to have strong technical knowledge across a range of automation control systems as well as strong communication skills.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

− Provide technical expertise for problem solving new project development and design principles and project delivery

− Support and develop close collaboration between associates in Engineering functions, R&D, Operations, Process, IT Regulatory, Quality Assurance, etc

− Development of key strategic relationships with other J&J sites institutions and third level institutions, to facilitate cross site sharing of ideas and collaboration.

− Be a role model by setting the appropriate norms and behavioural traits for all members of the automation engineering team

− Act as a mentor / coach to assist talent development within the automation group.

− Develop effective automation development tools and systems to facilitate successful project development and implementation

− Actively contribute to and participate in the development and implementation of JJVs Engineering strategic objectives.

− Act as support for senior management team for technical support as needed.

Education and Experience:

− Primary Degree (Level 8) in an appropriate engineering or Computer Science with minimum 5 years experience.

− Masters Degree in a relevant Engineering discipline would be consider advantageous

− Relevant experience with automated control systems.

− Strong PLC development background in Siemens S7, APT, Allen Bradley ControlLogix 5000, Pilz Safety PLCs and Wonderware Intouch/ArchestrA HMI software.

− Strong working knowledge of and application of I4.0

− Knowledge of printer systems, vision systems, robotics, BCR and RFID systems would be beneficial

− Excellent analytical and problem solving skills, root cause analysis and risk assessments with a strong attention to detail.

− Proven ability to work on own initiative and deliver results.

− Good interpersonal and communication skills with proven leadership abilities.

− Familiarity with manufacturing and validation in a regulated (FDA or IMB) environment an advantage.

− Must be flexible and able to manage multiple priorities simultaneously.

− Experience of lean concepts such as 5S and standard work would be an advantage.
