Head of IT

Role Purpose

The Head of IT role provides leadership in the operation, management and development of the Information Technology & Software Development department. The role includes the responsibility to plan, coordinate, and supervise all activities related to the design, development and implementation of organisational information systems and software applications, and the operations and maintenance of information systems through best practices; and the appropriate staffing and management of technical teams.

The Head of IT is also responsible for technology risk management including the management of business continuity, disaster recovery and information security. The Head of IT supports business sourcing decisions by evaluating the needs of the business with appropriate partners and suppliers, preparing and evaluating tenders, and making recommendations that best meet the organizational needs. 

Key Accountabilities 

Manage the IT and software development teams responsible for the portfolio of business critical information and software applications

  • Set the overall standards and objectives for the teams, managing performance and professional development, identifying and arranging appropriate training, developing the teams' skills and experience thus equipping the team for both current requirements and emerging technologies
  • Responsible for the delivery of Information Systems and associated support services to customers across the business including systems availability and performance, operations support and change management services
  • Responsible for implementing the strategic approach to information and information systems portfolio management
  • Develop and maintain a roadmap of the existing information systems portfolio ensuring that upgrades and enhancements are evaluated and deployed appropriately in collaboration with business users and technical colleagues
  • Ensure that the Information Systems within the portfolio are compliant with internal security policies and external legislative requirements such as data protection
  • Ensure appropriate organizational and technical controls are in place to meet the cyber security needs of the business and regulatory compliance
  • Work with colleagues in Engineering, Infrastructure, Operations and Project teams to put in place robust and repeatable processes for transitioning new services to the live environment
  • Develop and quality assure project proposals and business cases for new information systems and ensure that they meet strategic objectives
  • Advise the business of the relative opportunities, costs and risk of the proposed projects and current portfolio
  • Work with colleagues to ensure that information systems projects are appropriately resourced and deliver the scope, schedule, budget and quality expectations of the business
  • Responsible for business continuity and disaster recovery management for the company
  • Responsible for the information security management system for the company

We have recently opened our state-of-the-art Network Operations Centre (NOC), which is part of the new €1m headquarters in Limerick. This facility doubles the size of the premises we have and will enable us to continue to deliver a genuinely world-class service for our customers. The NOC operates on a 24/7 basis all year round monitoring our wide range of infrastructure. Enet operates the largest, alternative, wholesale telecoms network in Ireland. Our infrastructure comprises of over 5,400 Km of state-of-the-art fibre, including metro fibre (Enet owned networks and the Irish State’s Metropolitan Area Networks) and a unique dark fibre backhaul network. In addition, the company also operates one of the largest licensed wireless networks in the country. Taken together, Enet’s infrastructure creates a fully integrated, nationwide network that is truly open access in nature, enabling our customers, the retail service providers, to deliver world class bandwidth services to their customers throughout Ireland.

Required Qualifications/Experience

  • 3rd level qualification in a technical or business discipline or equivalent industry experience
  • Minimum 10 years work experience with 4 years’ experience in a management and or leadership position
  • Extensive knowledge of IT infrastructure, application architecture, system development methodologies.
  • Knowledge of standards and best practices relating to IT and Information systems development (e.g ITIL, ISO 9001, ISO20000, ISO27001, NIST, ENSIA, CoBIT, etc)
  • Detailed knowledge of IT controls and governance procedures including risk management strategies
  • Previous experience of leading a team providing high quality operational support and maintenance, system development and project management
  • Demonstrable experience and knowledge of software development lifecycles and methodologies including Agile methods
  • Experience in the presentation and interpretation of complex information to non-technical audiences
  • Previous experience of data centre environments, on premise server deployments including hyper-converged infrastructure, windows and linux server, virtualisation technologies, cloud technologies (IaaS, SaaS, PaaS)
  • A track record of managing complex and significant projects and programmes
  • Experience managing vendors
  • Experience in creating and managing opex and capex budgets
  • Innovative and lateral thinker with the tenacity to see things through to a successful outcome
  • Previous experience in a telco environment preferred.
