Job Description

PRIMARY FUNCTION:

Eaton Corporation’s Center for Intelligent Power has an opening for a graduate Systems Engineer with experience in embedded RTOS or Linux-based software engineering and development looking to create, improve, and enhance firmware and software for Eaton’s Analytics platform.  This platform will provide a set of reusable embedded and analytics components which will be used throughout the Eaton business to produce products for Eaton’s customers. The Systems Engineer will be involved in the design, development, and testing of edge and cloud-based systems. In addition to building and maintaining these systems, the Systems Engineer will also work to ensure that the functionality is usable, reusable, and extensible for data engineers and business users across the enterprise.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Work with your team and others, contributing to the architecture, design, development, and testing of prototype and pre-production firmware and software
  • Develop firmware for data input/output, networking, digital signal processing, and transducer integration while ensuring security
  • Utilize development environments and frameworks as required for business and data engineering needs
  • Recommend and set up appropriate performance monitoring solutions; author and implement based on the results
  • Document and demonstrate solutions by using flowcharts, diagrams, code comments, code snippets, and performance instruments
  • Evaluate business requirements to determine potential solutions.
  • Author high-quality, highly-performance, unit-tested code based on business and data engineering needs and participate in code reviews
  • Work directly with stakeholders, engineering, and test to create high quality solutions that solve end-user problems

EDUCATION:

Requires a minimum of a Bachelor’s or higher degree(s) in computer science, computer engineering, electronic engineering or software engineering

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:

  • Ability to translate complex technical requirements into a set of modular functional blocks designed for efficient use of memory, processing, and energy resources.
  • Solid understanding of C/C++/Python and associated IDEs (Eclipse, IAR Embedded Workbench, PyCharm, etc.)
  • Experience with Matlab and system modelling using Simulink.
  • Understanding of Agile development methodologies and concepts
  • Experience with version control tools such as git, SVN.
  • Strong problem solving and software debugging skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills including the ability to effectively explain technical concepts and solutions
  • Abreast of upcoming software development/engineering tools, trends, and methodologies
  • Good judgment, time management, and decision-making skills

Desired Expertise (in one or more of the following areas):

  • Experience in developing and designing Linux ARM/x86-based firmware and software
  • Experience in the software industry as a developer with a proven track record of delivering high quality products
  • Experience designing and developing IoT and cloud-based software architectures, platforms, and frameworks
  • Experience building and extending libraries to support software functionality needs of other roles
  • Linux expertise covering makefiles, CMake, cross-compilation, debugging, code coverage, unit testing, automation, and shell scripting
  • Wired/wireless communications, networking, and transport protocols, service layers, message queues, and related technologies (WLAN, Bluetooth, mesh, cellular technologies, Ethernet/IPv4/IPv6, UDP, TCP, RDP, SNMP, Modbus, MQTT, ZeroMQ, AMQP, OPC UA)
  • Cybersecurity best practices, information and physical security, authentication, authorisation, and attestation
  • Digital signal processing and transducer technologies e.g. sensor and actuator integration, discovery, & control, analysis, and low-latency decision control loop approaches
  • IoT/controller ARM/x86-based microcontroller development expertise
  • Fog/Edge computing experience e.g. edge devices, gateways, basestations, and small cells targeting industrial IoT, Industry 4.0, smart cities, smart grids, and 5G
