About the team

The Gartner for Technical Professionals (GTP) team is a highly collaborative group of technology industry analysts. Members of the team work together to produce research that answers the most pressing questions for technical professionals in government, commercial and not-for-profit organizations. GTP analysts deliver research in the form of written documents, presentations, inquiries, videos, blogs, and other forms of social media. A GTP analyst is an articulate thought-leader as well as an inquisitive student. The ideal candidate will have a hands-on practitioner background from working in advanced technical roles (e.g. Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET), Test Lead, Software or Solution Architect, Senior or Principal Software Engineer, Lead Software Developer, CTO of a smaller organization, etc.)

  • Develop thought leading research concepts and content.
  • Work with clients on strategic and tactical technology challenges.
  • Deliver presentations at Gartner events, including Catalyst, Summits, and Symposia.
  • Work with cloud, software, and other technology vendors on product direction.
  • Attain industry leadership by responding to press inquiries and speaking at industry events.
  • Support Gartner sales with client visits and consultation.
  • Contribute to research and agenda planning.

Requirements:

  • GTP is seeking an experienced software testing professional. Qualified candidates will demonstrate expertise in three or more of the following areas:
    • Expertise in software testing strategies and practices, including deep expertise with several testing styles, such as unit testing, static code analysis, performance testing, security testing, database testing, service testing, API testing, GUI testing, test environment automation, service virtualization and application performance monitoring. Practical experience applying these testing approaches to Web, mobile, API/services and/or database testing.
    • Experience with agile and lean development, such as Scrum and Kanban plus scaling with SAFe or Spotify, and with related Agile planning tools, such as Azure Boards, Jira, Rally, or VersionOne.
    • Experience with test automation, in particular continuous integration and delivery tools, and the required programming language understanding to successfully use test automation tools like Selenium, xUnit and Cucumber.
    • Deep opinions on DevOps toolchain product, practice and framework trends, including CCA products such as Chef, Puppet, and Ansible, CI products such as Jenkins, TravisCI and Atlassian, Release management products such as IBM UrbanCode uDeploy, CA Release Automation, and ElectricCloud and VCS products such as Github and Subversion.
    • Understanding of and experience with Application Performance Management practices and tools. Strong opinions of how application architects and developers should understand and work with APM tools, such as AppDynamics, New Relic, and Dynatrace.
    • Strong understanding of how to apply testing in the context of distributed and service-based architectures, including microservices, serverless, event-driven, container-based, SaaS, and cloud-native.
    • Expertise with Microsoft development platform tools, especially Azure DevOps, GitHub Enterprise, C# and related .NET technologies such as MVC, WebAPI, EF and Visual Studio.
    • Technology Team Leadership (e.g. product ownership, community management, development/QA team management)
  • The successful candidate has substantial expertise and is likely to be viewed as an evangelist for these topics in industry or within an enterprise.
  • Candidates may come from an end user environment, software vendor in the product team, creative design shop as a supplier and/or a consulting background in this space.
  • Whilst hands-on technical knowledge and experience is critical, it is equally important that the successful candidate has the ability to see beyond technology to meet business and commercial aims.
  • Excellent writing and research skills, coupled with strong analytical skills.
  • Excellent presentation skills, including small to large audiences (500+ people)
  • Excellent collaboration skills, able to graciously give and receive constructive feedback
  • Ability to take a position, based on facts, and support that position to clients, both external and internal, with clear analysis. Willingness to openly consider new information. “Strong opinions, weakly held.”
  • Broad knowledge of industry trends and emerging technologies.
  • Ability to identify how changing technologies will impact technology choices in architectural decisions.
  • Ability to travel approximately 10-20% of the time (post-pandemic), mostly within the region (EMEA/NA depending on home base), some international travel.
