Scrum Master

The scrum master will work with one or more teams, and is responsible for many activities that fall into each of the following key areas:

  • Facilitating the team’s progress toward the goal: Scrum Masters are team facilitators, constantly engaged in challenging the old norms of development while keeping the team focused on the goals of the iteration.
  • Leading the team’s efforts in continuous improvement: This includes helping the team improve and take responsibility for their actions, while also coaching the team become problem solvers for themselves.
  • Coaching Teams on the Agile approach: our approach to agile is lightweight and flexible, and with Teams at different stages in their agile maturity, Scrum Master are constantly identifying ways in which teams can be further improved to reach their potential.
  • Eliminating Impediments: Many issues will be beyond the team’s authority or will require support from other teams. This role actively addresses these issues so that the team can remain focused on achieving the objectives of the iteration, and plan as to how they can ultimately consume these activities long-term into the team.

*If you are a non-Irish Citizen, you will need to be in possession of a current police disclosure certificate from your home country. If you have lived outside the Republic of Ireland for more than 6 months you will also be required to hold a current police disclosure certificate from that country/countries.

Desirable criteria

  • Evidence of self-improvement and drive to continuously learn (e.g. courses attended, books read) to improve your: Scrum Mastery skills; servant leadership style and people skills.
  • Knowledge of one or more scaling frameworks would be an advantage (LeSS, SaFE).
  • Practical experience of Agile at scale.

Essential Qualifications/Experience:

  • Experience working in a complex software environment with multiple deliveries, teams and dependencies.
  • A demonstrable understanding of different Agile approaches and the context in which they can succeed, helping the team evolve the common process that is most suitable for them.
  • Effective interpersonal & relationship skills, with the ability to work across functions, geographies and cultures.
  • Excellent communication skills in conflict resolution and negotiation.
  • Previous experience working in a software engineering role, development or test.
  • Experience working as a scrum master in a remote environment.
  • Certification, e.g. Certified Scrum Master (CSM) or Professional Scrum Master I (PSM I).
  • Strong Atlassian suite (Confluence/JIRA) skills.
  • Education to Degree level education or equivalent.

Essential Competencies/Skills:

  • Adept at enabling and coaching software teams using open questions, helping them to identify areas of improvement, providing support with alternative methods, and measuring the value of those improvements.
  • Demonstrate an ability to use data to help the team to make informed decisions e.g. using reports to tracking and measuring velocity, identify cycle time improvements etc with a focus on continuous improvement.
  • Proven experience in influencing & facilitating key discussions.
  • An ability to support the Product Owner in managing the Product Backlog.
  • Demonstrate evidence of how to improve the scrum processes of a team and the associated team behaviours.
  • An ability to teach, coach, inspire and motivate people to change their values and practices.
  • The gift to communicate with all levels of the organization and deliver sensitive or difficult information tactfully and professionally.
  • Highly adaptable in world of changing priorities; comfortable with ambiguity.
  • Be transparent and appreciate openness and feedback from others.
  • An appetite to work across and contribute to the wider Aer Lingus & IAG scrum communities.
  • Understand and articulate the difference between “being Agile” and “doing Agile”.
