About the Team

Workday currently has a position open for a Principal or Senior Software Developer: Cloud Networking Specialist in Cloud Platform Engineering. 

To support Workday’s rapid growth, the Cloud Platform Engineering team is building a state-of-the-art multi-cloud platform to host thousands of customers seamlessly across public and private clouds.

We are looking for an experienced engineer to help develop and deploy service communication technologies to support existing and future networking needs for cloud native microservices and legacy services migrating to cloud. Resilience and scalability are the top priorities for our platform and this role will involve maximising the available solutions through thoughtful design, deployment and configuration, in addition to open source community participation and working closely with internal customers to understand the needs of their services.

The team operates as a software product team, using Scrum and DevOps practices to deliver the software solutions needed by our customers for seamless deployment to a true multi-cloud platform.

Our challenge is to meet the complex network connectivity, performance and security needs of our services, in a repeatable and predictable manner across our platform. To deliver these requirements at scale, with industry leading uptime and while minimising onboarding and operational friction.

The core technologies used by the Service Communication team today include Kubernetes, Istio, Envoy.

About the Role

You will have an opportunity to 

  • Develop a deep understanding of Workday’s industry leading products and work with talented internal engineering teams to help them deploy to a multi-cloud environment using modern cloud-native orchestration, deployment and monitoring technology
  • Work with the upstream community to improve and optimise Istio and Envoy for large scale, high uptime deployments
  • Use Istio Service Mesh to deliver innovative service connectivity features to internal services allowing high availability, rapid prototyping, hitless upgrades and continuous deployment
  • Help create a centre of excellence for Cloud networking technologies in the Platforms organisation: Ingress, Egress and Service Mesh
  • Work closely with infrastructure and vendor teams to align the networking design at all layers with the needs of the business 

Basic Qualifications: Principal Software Development Engineer: Mesh Networking

• BSc in Computer Science or related field.

• 8+ years experience with Linux systems engineering and networking

• 8+ years experience with professional software development

Basic Qualifications: Senior Software Development Engineer: Mesh Networking

• BSc in Computer Science or related field.

• 4+ years experience with Linux systems engineering and networking

• 4+ years experience with professional software development

Other Qualifications:

• Ideally, you have knowledge and experience of public cloud platforms such as AWS, GCP, Azure etc

• You are passionate about delivering high quality solutions and you are comfortable operating across multiple technology areas: Software Development, CI/CD, configuration management, networking, container orchestration and systems administration.

• You have hands on experience with public cloud infrastructure and tooling and have implemented container orchestration with Kubernetes

• You possess deep understanding of Container networking, proxies and Service Mesh architecture, design patterns and tooling. In particular, demonstrated expertise and experience with Envoy and Istio.

• You are proficient in at least one of (GoLang, Python, Ruby), preferably GoLang (Go)

• You gain energy from learning new things and from solving problems for customers. You have a flexible approach to new challenges and work well as part of a team
