Head of Scientific Writing

60 – The number of new medicines Novartis will seek approval for over the next 2-3 years. As the Head of Scientific Writing at Novartis you will lead multi-franchise Scientific Writing teams. This will involve leading strategic and operational planning for Scientific Writing, oversight on budget and resource allocation and driving any key strategic writing initiatives. The Head of Scientific Writing will drive process excellence, productivity and quality metrics in Scientific Writing services and encourage operational and functional excellence through outstanding people management. 

Your responsibilities:
Your responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

• Provide operational / functional leadership to cross franchise teams and associated services to effectively deliver in a global and multicultural environment.
• Deployment of Scientific Writing and associated services resources, supporting multi-franchise, multi-geographical and global projects.
• Manage resource and capacity building as well as allocation according to priorities and needs, ensuring deliverables are adequately supported.
• Responsible for achieving global productivity targets for Scientific Writing. Implementing productivity and efficiency measures within the team to meet Novartis strategic imperatives, client feedback and productivity targets. Also driving any service development & optimization initiatives within Scientific Writing.
• Responsible for the defined NGSC (Novartis Global Service Center) Scientific Writing revenue & P&L. Represent Scientific Writing as a member of the NGSC cross-domain Extended Leadership Team.
• Recruit and retain talent; coach and develop people; establish a team founded on innovation, high performance and trust. Provide coaching and mentoring for both associates within their team and other functions.
• Drive collaboration with the wider Medical Communications teams including Scientific Events & Medical Information teams.
• Ensure full compliance with GPP & internal SOPs and that the function is auditable at all time.

Bachelor’s/Master’s degree in Science/Life Sciences/Healthcare or a combination of relevant education, training and experience.
• Ideally 10 years’ of Medical Communications / related experience. Excellent understanding of Scientific Writing, including GPP.
• Superior people management skills. Approx. 4 years’ of people management experience required, and ideally people management in a matrixed environment.
• Ability to mentor and coach associates, and demonstrated positive leadership, innovative, and collaborative behaviors.
• Strong organizational, planning, resource and project management skills. Ability to coordinate interactions across lines/functions. As well as strong interpersonal, communication, and problem solving skills.
• Fluent written and oral English and excellent attention to detail.
